Tragically losing his left eye 10 years ago while attempting to break up a scuffle, Keillah, who is affectionately known as The Friendly Pirate, has revealed how he emotionally overcame the accident.

“People around me were so upset for me that I felt like I had to be the one to man up and show that I could do this and that I’m fine,” Keillah, 34, said.

“It wasn’t about acting tough, but I just knew I could be the one to make everyone around me feel better.”

And when he met his match in Allen six years ago, she didn’t give his eyepatch a second thought.

“I didn’t even question it. I just thought he must have had a surf injury or something,” Allen, 27, said.

“But just after we met I do remember sending him a message saying ‘I’ll keep an eye out for you’ and as soon as I hit send I was like ‘you didn’t just send a message to a guy with one eye saying I’ll keep an eye out,’ but it was just the beginning of many jokes,” she laughed.

The blondies from Byron Bay kicked off season 11 of MKR on Monday night and despite having more than 133,000 Instagram followers between them, they were still feeling anxious about their television debut.

“I think it’s natural to be a little bit nervous,” Allen said.

“You never know how you are going to come across with editing or how things are perceived, but we’re pretty confident that we’re pretty confident that we will be perceived exactly how we are.”

“We’re already being recognised in the street from just the advertising, it’s insane, so what’s going to happen once the show is actually out and everyone actually gets to see us cook?” Keillah added.

MKR continues on Seven tonight at 7pm.
