AFTER a quote attributed to Miranda Kerr appeared on the cover of a children’s health book that compares vaccination to smoking, comments from her mother Therese revealing her vaccination scepticism are set to raise eyebrows.

In a detailed post to her health blog theresekerr.com she warns her readers to educate themselves before making a choice as to whether they should vaccinate their children or not.

She highlights debunked research from widely ridiculed anti-vaxxer Dr Mercola and discusses “... the recent research that outlines the scientific evidence presented in relation to the link between vaccinations and the increase in autism in children.

“I am not against vaccinations; I am for pro-choice for everyone. We need the right to choose.”

The comments from 2014, combined with a quote from her daughter appearing on the front of the book Well Adjusted Babies by author and influential Australian chiropractor Dr Jennifer Barham-Floreani, question the high-profile women’s stance on vaccination.

In Barham-Floreani’s book she says that her position on vaccination is “pro-choice” rather than anti-vax. The front page features the quote “Our little Flynn is definitely a well-adjusted baby,” from Miranda.

The vaccination chapter in Well-Adjusted Babies is littered with anti-vaccination content. Barham-Floreani, who is believed to be a friend of Therese, reveals that she decided not to vaccinate her own children and quotes an author who said: “If I was to follow my deepest convictions, I would urge you to reject all inoculations for your child.”

She also alludes to a relationship between autism and vaccination.

While a source close to Miranda Kerr said her quote was out of context and did not represent an endorsement of the book, her mother’s stance is a lot clearer. Therese’s business Divine markets organic products and is devoted to ‘clean; living. Australian Medical Association NSW VP Professor Brad Frankum said celebrities should be cautious when endorsing controversial publications.

“It’s important that celebrities are careful not to endorse things that are discredited,” he said. “People can be swayed by the opinions of those they admire.”

Neither Miranda, who is in Vienna on a promotional tour, nor Therese was available for comment last night.
