Get ready Sydney. Hollywood is still coming.
Fresh from Saturday’s exclusive that Julia Roberts and Sean Penn are headed here to shoot a TV series in the coming weeks, Confidential can reveal that the Harbour City has been earmarked as a hub for the next five years of Marvel blockbusters.
Sources at the pointy end of mega studio Disney say Marvel head Kevin Feige is set to relocate Down Under permanently as the blockbuster factory prepares to base its filmmaking operations out of Sydney for the ‘foreseeable future’.
That would see the next batch of Marvel films all shot at Moore Park’s studios, including Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 (starring Chris Pratt), Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2 (led by Brie Larson) and the Dr Strange sequel starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
And, in another coup for Sydney’s status as Hollywood 2.0, Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence is also poised to arrive next month to begin shooting the next attempt to reboot the Fantastic Four franchise.
She will be joined here by Irish megastar Colin Farrell and Scott Eastwood — son of Hollywood legend Clint — both of whom are set to film independent projects.
The latest wave of Hollywood heavyweights is also rumoured to include a swath of high-powered studio executives who will bed down in Sydney as its reputation as the new epicentre of international movie production rolls on.
“There is nowhere in the world where films can be shot in the way they can be here in Australia,” says a studio source, who confirmed the Marvel Universe will call Australia home indefinitely.
“Sydney is the perfect place for the Marvel blockbusters because most are essentially shot in front of a green screen.
“The whole studio is essentially transplanting itself from the US.”
Until recently the Marvel headquarters — responsible for churning out a string of billion-dollar grossing comic book adaptations — has been based in Atlanta in the US.
However COVID has shut the production facilities.
