Things don’t get bigger than right now for homegrown Hollywood powerhouse Margot Robbie.
Barbie, the most-hyped movie of 2023, has finally hit the cinemas today. Robbie sat down with the Vogue in Sydney to shoot their August cover, and banter with director Greta Gerwig about the making of the film, how they first met and fell professionally “in love”, and the global hype that surpassed any expectations.
“You know at the end of the year when all the awardsy films are coming out and you’re, like, ‘I know they’re going to be good, but I gotta sit through six very …’” Robbie said about why she chose the project.
“I don’t really feel like I wanna watch something sad.”
Gerwig, who Robbie dubs “queen of the indie scene”, and the Queensland-born superstar describe their movie as “a lobster roll”.
“It’s cheeky,” per Robbie. “It’s a naughty thing,” per Gerwig. “It’s expensive,” also per Gerwig. “It’s pink,” per me. “It is a lobster roll,” Gerwig said.
When the duo met, Gerwig had directed Ladybird, and Robbie was famed for I, Tonya.
“We’d met and had this moment and then after the Oscars in 2018, I was leaving the Chateau [Marmont]. It was dawn,” Gerwig recalled.
Robbie and her husband Tom Ackering were coming in from “a really big night,” she’s since forgotten.
“We both saw each other and we all just started laughing,” Gerwig said.
Robbie: “Was I going to a party?”
Gerwig: “I think you were going to sleep!”
The women are so effusive about each other’s professional talent, work ethic, and personal qualities. Although, Robbie says she was initially insecure.
“I was like, ‘Oh, she’s queen of the Rob scene and I’m just like a Colgate toothpaste model. She’s going to be so bored talking to me. But as soon as we sat down I was like, ‘Oh she’s so smart, but she doesn’t make other people around her feel dumb. I loved you immediately.
I was like, ‘I wanna be around her all the time and I really, really wanna work with her.’ I’m so glad it was this.”
As far as film spoilers go, don’t worry about any big giveaways.
However, Robbie’s favourite moment is when Ken takes over Barbie’s Dreamhouse.
“ — and just fills it full of dude stuff that makes everything look visually unappealing. Like flatscreen TVs. Gaming chairs. Black leather couches,” she said. “There’s a whole joke about mini fridges and it’s probably my favourite joke in the whole thing.”
The August issue of Vogue Australia, featuring Margot Robbie’s cover story, is on sale Monday, July 31.
