Music festival Groovin the Moo has been cancelled for 2024 just a week after its line-up announcement.
Organisers took the extraordinary step of revealing the news on its website and social media, citing poor ticket sales as the reason.
“We are extremely disappointed to announce that the Groovin the Moo 2024 tour has been forced to cancel,” the post read.
“Ticket sales have not been sufficient to deliver a regional festival of this kind. All tickets will be refunded automatically. Thank you to everybody who has supported the festival. We hope to be able to bring Groovin the Moo back to regional communities in the future.”
Groovin the Moo is a travelling festival that was to start in Adelaide on April 25 and play Canberra’s Exhibition Park the following day.
May 4 was set for Newcastle’s Foreshore Park.
The 2024 line-up included Alison Wonderland, Melanie C, Hot Dub Time Machine, The Kooks, Mallrat, San Cisco, Stephen Sanchez, Armani White, Jet and The Grogans.
Artists are understood to have been notified of the news hours earlier.
Just 24 hours before the announcement, Groovin the Moo programmer Rich Moffat announced his retirement from the music industry and “formal booking roles”.
Moffat worked on the festival line-up, booking local and international artists.
“Music friends … a post to pass on the news that I’ve decided to step away and retire from formal booking roles / music business in 2024,” Moffat wrote in a lengthy Facebook post.
“Music will always be my number one passion in life, but it feels time to make some space for others to take charge as curators of future events.
“I have been so lucky to be able to do my ‘dream job’ over the last 30 years. Words cannot express how grateful I am to all the people who have given me opportunities and supported my often wonky visions.”
