Madeleine Madden: Indigenous actor doesn’t want to see historic statues torn down

AUSTRALIA’S most sought-after young indigenous actor has spoken out against the PC push to alter or tear down monuments to the country’s colonial past.

AUSTRALIA’S most sought-after young indigenous actor has spoken out against the PC push to alter or tear down monuments to the country’s colonial past.

But Madeleine Madden — who will soon appear in Foxtel’s upcoming Picnic at Hanging Rock — does back calls to change the date of Australia Day from January 26.

“Tearing (statues) down is not the way ... it creates negativity,” Ms Madden said. “Let’s have statues like that, but let’s also have statues of indigenous men and women. I think the way we should go is to have more.”

Ms Madden, whose grandfather was Aboriginal activist Charles Perkins, considers herself an activist too and has recently signed to front Ella Baché’s #IWillBeMe campaign to empower young women.
