IT was a “fury of Oscars” as the winners of Mad Max: Fury Road touched down in Sydney this morning.

Walking out of the arrival gate to a round of applause and mobbed by fans, the group stopped– gold statues in hand, to share their pride at the impressive six Oscars win, the highest number ever won by an Australian film.

Looking energised despite the long flight from LA, the film’s director George Miller was joined by his wife Margaret Sixel, who won best film editing and Lesley Vanderwalt and Damian Martin who won best makeup and hairstyling and John Seale.

Miller said the wins proved Australian films were as good as from Hollywood and beyond.

“I think the main thing is it shows that we can do really great work. It’s a big deal, it’s fantastic,” he said.

But Ms Sixel said while the wins were an extraordinary feeling, she wished Miller had won best director.

“I’m very proud of him. He is sort of the master mind of all this. None of us others would have won an Oscar without him. And he didn’t win an Oscar, so it is kind of bittersweet for the rest of us.”

Ms Sixel joked the gongs had allowed the group to get into any after party just by the flash of the statue, but the group were now partied out.

Instead they said they would opt for low key celebrations, “good Sydney coffee” for Ms Vanderwalt, a swim at Bondi Beach for Miller and Ms Sixel and for Mr Martin, spending the day with his family.
