Nicole Kidman has backed international productions shooting in Australia in what are turbulent times for the film and television industry.

The Academy Award winner has been a trailblazer for bringing big shows Down Under, including the first season of Nine Perfect Strangers during the uncertain times of Covid and the recent hit, The Last Anniversary.

“I was just glad that The Last Anniversary, which we made in Australia with Australians, has been a huge success,” Kidman told Confidential.

“I think a lot of it is just right now hoping that things stay because we’re not sure with streamers what’s happening, you’re not with any of this industry, there’s a lot of change happening.”

Kidman spoke to Confidential ahead of today’s release of the second season of Nine Perfect Strangers through Prime Video. The show sees Kidman reprise her role as controversial wellness guru Masha Dmitrichenko, in what is almost guaranteed to be another huge hit for the celebrated Australian.

She is also an executive producer with her Blossom Films behind the project, alongside Bruna Papandrea’s Made Up Stories and David E. Kelley.

Kidman gave a cautious opinion on the changes impacting a volatile industry after the announcement by US President Donald Trump that he would introduce a 100 per cent tax on movies “produced in foreign lands”.

“As Masha is dealing with the new frontier and the new horizon, which I find really interesting, it is like, ‘Okay, we don’t know what’s coming next, but what we do know is that we love what we’re doing, we love the arts, we love being able to bring stories and connect with people’,” Kidman continued.

“For all of us on Nine Perfect say, it’s about connection and hopefully people watching the show.

“You go in being entertained, but hopefully you come out having either related to one of the characters, all of them, or being taken on a journey with a little bit of psychedelic thrown in.”
