EIGHT years after Heath Ledger’s untimely death, his family say that the actor’s legacy lives on in his daughter Matilda — who they would very much like to see more.
“She’s such a reminder of her Dad,” said the late actor’s mum, Sally.
“Matilda is exactly like her dad, she looks just like him,” added his father Kim.
The grandparents, who describe the 10-year-old as “a little New Yorker”, said that they don't see her as often they would like.
“She’s not here that much because of Michelle (Williams)’s lifestyle,” said Sally, who was in Sydney yesterday alongside daughter Kate for the announcement of the finalists of the annual Heath Ledger scholarship.
“And of course with her school it’s important to be consistent and not take her out of class,” said Sally.
Despite the tyranny of distance, members of the Perth-based Ledger family make a number of trips every year to see the schoolgirl.
“It’s incredibly hard, especially New York to Perth — if you put a skewer through the Earth in New York, it would come out six hours south of Perth. it’s a really long way away,” Kate laughed.
Following the announcement of the winner of the Heath Ledger scholarship in Los Angeles next month, Kim will head to the Big Apple to see his granddaughter.
“Between us all, we try and get over there throughout the year to see her,” he explained.
Australia’s hottest crop of new young actors was revealed as the finalists for the scholarship.
They are Christian Antidormi, Mojean Aria, Natasha Bassett, Chloe Bayliss, Harley Bonner, Shareena Clanton, Ashleigh Cummings, Georgia Flood, Sean Keenan, Uli Latukefu, Sara West and Meyne Wyatt.
Previous winners of the grant include the likes of Ryan Corr and Bella Heathcote.
This year’s winner, as determined by a panel including Toni Collette and Abbie Cornish, will be announced at a function in Los Angeles next month.
“It’s a really special legacy,” said Kate.
