Lachie Gill opens up on new single, life as a recording artist

Former The Voice winner Lachie Gill says budding artists shouldn’t expect to become an overnight sensation if they star on a show, as the hard work is only just getting started.

Former The Voice Australia winner Lachie Gill has sung from the heart with his new single about a break-up.

Gill had been dating now ex-girlfriend Yonja Hasan for around a year when he was crowned winner of the reality singing show in 2022. His new track, Hate That You Hurt, was inspired by the relationship.

“It all kind of happened really fast and obviously after the show I was travelling, going to different places and living this dream,” Gill told Confidential.

“I wouldn’t say I neglected my relationship but it was a massive change for my relationship and I don’t think my partner signed up for that craziness that happened and it kind of just started to crumble from there. It was definitely a mixture of winning the show and the craziness that came with that and trying to figure out my personal life while going through that.”

Gill, 25, has been working hard since winning The Voice under the guidance of coach Rita Ora.

While some would see it as an instant path to success, the reality is that it can be a hard slog.

Gill is a realist and said he will put in the hard work.

“People think that if they’ve just won a TV show they are going to be a star, it is not how it works,” he explained.

“You then join the music industry and you’ve been given this opportunity but you’re still up against all of the other incredible musicians.

“At the end of the day, there are so many artists out there and you have to be that little bit different or do something that is going to make people want to listen to you rather than someone else.

“I knew it was going to be hard before I went on the show and I think that was a good place to be in because I didn’t think anyone owed me anything or I didn’t think the show was going to do it for me.

“Regardless of the show, I am a bit of a realist and I knew it was going to be hard work. I kind of like that though, I’ve accepted that this is going to be a long journey and I just have to enjoy it all.”

Gill has a vault full of new tracks ready to release over the coming months.

“We’ve got maybe 12 or 13 songs ready to go that we can put out so definitely want to get those out in a reasonable amount of time so that people aren’t waiting four months every time for a new song,” he said.

“There will be some more singles and we’ve got a plan to put something bigger, a bit of a larger project for the back end of the year. I am super excited for this next part.

“I think I am slowly starting to change people’s minds about that misconception of winners of TV shows and just being singers and whatnot, I want to show people that I want to hang around for a while.

“I love writing music and I think I’ve got some good songs to back that up so that is the plan for the next while.”
