After reports former 2GB broadcaster Alan Jones may join rival network 2SM, The Daily Telegraph can reveal the extraordinary clause in Jones’ contract which puts the rumours to rest.
On Monday morning KIIS radio host Kyle Sandilands reignited speculation Jones, the former longtime host of the 2GB Breakfast Show, may join radio competitors - 2SM.
“Word in radio land is that he’s joining 2SM,” Sandilands said.
But sources close to the deal told The Daily Telegraph it’s impossible for Jones to join radio mogul Bill Caralis’ 2SM network because of an exit clause in his 2GB deal.
The strict clause means Alan Jones can’t go on-air on another radio show until 12pm.
The Telegraph also understands 2SM has no intention of hiring the veteran broadcaster.
The Daily Telegraph approached Nine Radio on Monday but the network didn’t wish to comment.
Rumours the former Sky News host would join radio mogul Bill Caralis’ 2SM network began circulating last year after he appeared on broadcaster John Laws’ show.
Jones departed Sky News after eight years in November.
He first joined Sky in 2013 as co-host of Richo + Jones and in 2016, he went on to host Jones & Co. He later began hosting the Alan Jones program.
It comes after 2SM’s Marcus Paul was axed last month following an on-air incident.
He made headlines after asking radio listeners of his Marcus Paul In The Morning show to answer a trivial question about alleged murder victim Charlise Mutten, for a chance to win singer Adele’s new CD.
“I am devastated,” he said after the firing. “All I can say is that I do apologise for the segment and if I had my time again and more resources and maybe a bit more help, it wouldn’t have happened.
“But there is no excuse, it happened and you have to be philosophical about these things and I will hopefully be able to move on and I wish them well.”
Paul hosted the 2SM show for nearly two years, providing a lead-in to the big star of the station, John Laws.
