Kerri-Anne Kennerley calls for change in Logie voting after Tom Gleeson controversy

Kerri-Anne Kennerley says an overhaul of nominations may be how to fix the Logie Awards after comedian Tom Gleeson’s controversial Gold win.

Tom Gleeson's Logies take over

Kerri-Anne Kennerley has suggested an overhaul of nominations may be the fix the Logie Awards need moving forward after comedian Tom Gleeson’s controversial Gold win.

The Logie Award Hall of Famer believes nominations should be put forward by the industry before being opened up to the public. Until now, it has been a free for all with anyone able to be nominated via TV Week magazine.

“Having so many nominees this year, there were too many,” the respected industry veteran told Confidential.

“They should maybe be industry voted nominations and then open it up to the public and you do your best, if you can get more social media, fantastic. That is what it is these days, social media. Compared to the good old days where publicists would sit in their office and post them in with false addresses so what is the difference.”

The Logies were heavily criticised this year, particularly the Gold category, which featured a number of lower profile nominees, including Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac and ABC gardening guru Costa Georgiadis.

“They will figure it all out, there will be a million different ways to do it,” Kennerley said.

A week after Gleeson’s Gold win, Kennerley softened somewhat on the comedian.

After last week on Studio 10 calling him a “wimp”, she said: “I thought his opening monologue was wonderful and I thought his speech was authentic and real. Yeah I would have liked to see him be a little more generous. It is our Logies so it is a shame he doesn’t treat it with the same reverence a few other people do but maybe we over do it.”

Gleeson called for the industry to lighten up after his win, having led a satirical campaign to take home the trophy, including controversially saying he didn’t want the award.

He also hit out at fellow nominees including Amanda Keller, who had the support of Gleeson’s ABC colleague, Leigh Sales.

“I like to think I can lighten up,” the 7.30 Report host told Confidential at opening night of Muriel’s Wedding The Musical at the Lyric Theatre on Thursday. “I am a mate of Amanda Keller and I absolutely love Amanda Keller so I would have loved to see her win it. But I think Tom made some really good points in his speech as well so I certainly don’t begrudge him winning it either.”
