ACTOR Johnny Depp was so difficult on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean, film executives were forced to camp outside his home to spy on the star.
Just weeks from the movie’s release, details of Depp’s behaviour have been revealed by those closest to the movie’s star.
During his time in Australia filming the blockbuster film, Depp’s world began to unravel with alleged excessive drinking and physical fights with then wife Amber Heard, as those closest to the star worried about
Depp’s tardiness on set forced producers to camp outside his house to monitor his movements.
“When he got up, he’d turn on the light, and the moment the light went on they’d call the line producer, who would then call the directors [Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg]: ‘He’s up! He’s getting ready!’ “ says an onset source revealed to The Hollywood reporter.
“They even had a special code term, like ‘The eagle has landed.’ Johnny had no idea this was going on.”
While those close to the production did their best to protect the star, Disney executive Sean Bailey revealed Depp often caused planned filming schedules to be thrown out the window.
“There were certainly days when our plans were challenged,” Bailey said.
Hollywood heavyweight and producer of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Jerry Bruckheimer said the movie’s star was under serious stress during his time Down Under.
“You’ve got to understand the kind of pressure Johnny was under in Australia,” Bruckheimer said.
“At times helicopters would follow him home. There would be so many media outside his gates that trucks were feeding them. There was so much stuff made up about him: that Johnny had a fight on set and had gone back to the States, which we both read about while we were in his trailer.”
