Property developer John Boyd and his young family got a taste of Gretel Packer’s $100m ship the Arctic P last week and word is, they want a piece of it.

Boyd and his wife, Marly, spent last week on board the 87m yacht while it was cruising around New Zealand, with Marly flaunting the ship and its many instagrammable toys on her social media.

While there were whispers the Boyds had joined a syndicate and part-owned the modified icebreaker, we’ve since found out they are one of many wealthy families hiring it out.

With the ship warranting a $10m-a-year upkeep bill, Gretel has enlisted a number of companies to hire it out.

“The Boyds were just visiting it while they were in New Zealand,” a source said. “It is a pretty special boat.

“Gretel still uses it a bit herself, but it has spent the last two years in Tahiti and it’s about to head back to the Med next season for the Mediterranean summer next year.

“It is currently in New Zealand.”

Arctic P, which was initially owned by family patriarch Kerry Packer, can be chartered through companies including CharterWorld and Ellie Malouf’s Ahoy Club.

Kerry’s daughter Gretel bought the boat from her brother James in about 2017 after the billionaire decided to upgrade to a $200m gigayacht.
