No longer “bubblegum pop”, chart topping Aussie artists Justice Crew are back with their first new music in six years.
It has been 15 years in fact since the then dance troupe won Australia’s Got Talent and went on to release number one singles Que Sera and Boom Boom.
This week their new track, Justice, is out.
“There was always a market for bubblegum pop and we were the spokesmen for that I guess for a while there,” original member Lukas Bellesini, 34, said.
“This is more up our alley. Like a lot of other songs that we did release in the past, they were fun to perform of course, but it was always coming from another space, another producer, another this or that. So it wasn’t exactly as genuine as we could have made it.”
Justice Crew are no longer signed to Sony Music Australia, instead releasing the new music independently.
Original members, twin brothers John and Len Pearce, are no longer part of the group as they are doing their own things. John is now with The Wiggles.
That leaves Bellesini, Paul Merciadez, Samson Smith, Solo Tohi and Emmanuel Rodriguez from the original line-up and Winston Sky and Mano Letyet have joined the group.
“I grew up watching Justice Crew,” Sky, 25, said.
“I remember them winning, Australia’s Got Talent, that’s actually what got me into dance when I was a kid, so it’s a very surreal feeling, very strange.“
Smith chimed in: “This is the new Justice, the new wave of younglings coming through.”
Another new factor for the group is that most have children now.
“We are calling it the resurrection,” Bellesini said of their return.
“Eventually the tank ran dry and it was kind of necessary for us to take a bit of a break because doing all of those high energy performances every day, you tend to burn out a bit.
“In the meantime, we’ve had some babies, most of us are dads now and that also added another layer of responsibility and commitment.”
A 13-date national tour is scheduled through to October and the crew will perform the halftime entertainment at the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs vs Wests Tigers NRL game at CommBank Stadium at the weekend.
“There’s no real concern for pleasing the right people anymore,” Bellesini said.
“This new song is just mainly for us to take a stand. We are more saying, we’re going to put this music out whether you like it or not and whoever likes it can like it, and whoever doesn’t, that is okay.”
