Jamie Durie has lamented the fact he may miss the birth of his second child due to being in mandatory hotel quarantine.
The popular television host returned to Australia from a three-month work trip to the United States at the weekend to be with model and singer fiance, Ameka Jane, who is 37 weeks pregnant.
“We are saying our prayers every day,” Durie told Confidential from his Sydney CBD hotel.
“It is one of the toughest things I have ever had to go through.”
It is Durie’s second child and his first with Jane, to whom he proposed earlier this year and is officially due on July 14.
“The thought of Ameka being in hospital giving birth five minutes from my hotel here and me not being able to see her is tearing me apart at the moment,” he said.
“There is every chance in the world that she could give birth any day now. When nature calls, we don’t really have any control over it. It is what it is but quarantine is part of the protocol here in Australia and like everybody else, I have got to do the time.”
Durie has spent the past three months shooting garden show Curb Appeal Extreme in Nashville for America’s HGTV Channel, part of the Discovery network that has more than 100,000,000 subscribers.
The 51-year-old is fully vaccinated but estimates he undertook more than 30 Covid tests while filming in the US.
“That is a lot of probing,” he said, adding of being away from his partner: “We talk five times a day and I feel like I have been as close as I can through the whole pregnancy but the last three months is pretty crucial and these shoot dates were not going to move for anything.
“I eventually just said to the producers, ‘Look I have just got to get home’. We hadn’t quite finished the last garden yet and my co-hosts weren’t even aware that I was leaving. My number one priority is to be home for family. This is our first child together so it is a very special occasion and I certainly don’t want to miss this birth.”
Durie is already father to 26-year-old daughter, Taylor, who is based in Los Angeles, from a previous relationship.”
He has been busy on Instagram while in quarantine, sharing some emotional moments when he and Jane saw each other through his hotel window.
“There was obviously lots of tears,” he said.
“There are plenty of couples going through situations like this and families have been torn apart all over the world due to Covid, our story is not unique but it certainly shines light on just how Covid has really just changed our lives and how it affects everyone.”
As to preparing for the arrival of bub, which the couple has chosen not to find out the gender, he said: “I am beyond excited. I have wanted a family for a long time now. I met the right girl and I am just besotted with her. We are like peas in a pod. It is such a natural, beautiful, reciprocal gorgeous relationship unlike anything I have ever felt before.”
