JAMES Packer and Mariah Carey may never again know the warmth of each other’s bosom — but they’ll always have Cabo.
Just weeks after Packer was discharged from a Boston rehabilitation centre comes word the billionaire has purchased land in Cabo San Lucas, a resort playground in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, one of Carey’s preferred holiday destinations.
According to close friends, the casino owner plans to build himself a luxury new villa overlooking the Sea of Cortez which will become his permanent new home base.
It was songbird Carey who introduced Packer to the delights of Cabo during their 18-month relationship in 2015 and ’16 say insiders.
Last year Packer moored his yacht, Arctic P, off Cabo’s rugged coastline and worked on his tan while waiting to be interviewed by police in connection with the Israeli investigation into Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Packer is not suspected of any wrongdoing.
The sun shines 350 days of the year in Cabo, a town renowned for its night-life and beaches.
While the businessman’s empty Bondi apartment has been looking increasingly untended in recent years, the billionaire has divided his time mainly between his homes in Aspen and Argentina.
It was to Argentina and his polo property Ellerstina, located an hour’s drive from Buenos Aires, that Packer retreated following the breakdown of his relationship with Carey in 2016.
But friends now say the months of isolation in Argentina did nothing for the reclusive billionaire’s health and contributed to the problems that saw his admission to a rehabilitation facility in Boston in March.
Packer’s reps have said he is suffering from mental health issues.
His recovery plan is understood to urge reconnection with family.
Cabo is only a two-hour flight from Los Angeles where his ex-wife Erica lives with the couple’s three young children — a far easier trip than the 14-hour flight to Argentina.
