THIS means war — the shock split of James Packer and Mariah Carey looks set to go nuclear.
The American diva’s camp ramped up the public relations campaign yesterday, labelling Packer “erratic”, while the Aussie billionaire’s circle has accused her of extravagant spending and making ridiculous demands.
Several days since their much-publicised breakup, Carey’s people are now alleging Packer’s “temper” and “strange behaviour” led to the relationship breakdown.
They claim Packer fought with both Carey and her personal assistant Stella Bulochnikov during a recent holiday in Greece.
Bulochnikov is believed to be the driving force behind Carey’s new reality TV show, which is also said to a source of tension for the couple.
The same sources also claim Packer flew into a jealous rage over the close friendship that has developed between the Vision Of Love singer and one of her backing singers, Bryan Tanaka.
Packer’s camp has denied these claims.
“The assertions about Mr Packer are false and untrue,” a spokesman said yesterday.
Sources within his circle of friends have fought back, leaking their version of events.
They are alleging the Aussie billionaire’s dumping of Carey was ultimately the result of some of his family members, who were blanching at Carey’s spending and financial demands.
However, a spokesman for the singer refuted those claims. He said the couple had split as a result of the now-infamous fight aboard Packer’s yacht in Greece and that their engagement was on hold indefinitely.
“Mariah and James had a fight in Greece and have not seen each other since,” the Carey rep told Entertainment Tonight. “The fight was not because of any cheating allegations or excessive spending by Mariah.”
Carey reportedly left the boat after the fight and immediately flew back to the US with her five-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan, from previous husband Nick Cannon.
The sensational claims surrounding the duelling pair come exactly 11 months since Packer dropped to one knee and proposed to Carey during a holiday in New York.
The Crown Casino boss sealed the deal with a 35-carat, $10 million ring which, according to at least one news outlet, he is insisting Carey keep regardless of whether they repair their relationship.
However, talks of reconciliation are looking increasingly unlikely.
