An embarrassing social media blunder involving Byron Bay model Ruby Tuesday Matthews has called into question the authenticity and ethics surrounding influencers and sponsored posts.
On Sunday, Matthews was left red-faced after being exposed for hosting a “fake” Q&A session on Instagram.
During the forum, an Instagram user usually selects a question from a follower and shares the responses publicly. Some influencers use this as an opportunity to shamelessly plug products or promote themselves.
But last night, eagle-eyed social media users noticed that the 27-year-old accidentally posted a screenshot of her Q&A questions, which revealed she had bizarrely asked herself some of the questions while trying to pass them off as coming from “fans”.
“It’s been awhile, let’s catch up,” she began.
One of the questions she asked herself was: “preferred brand of electronics that you have purchased for the new pad? How do you decide?”
She then responded by plugging four major brands, which were tagged in her lengthy response.
“Funny you asked this!” she replied.
“I’ve gone to a few different showrooms to see different styles. I basically go off 4 things. Energy. Efficiency. The look of it. And online ratings and price!
“I know there are great brands like @samsungau @LGAustralia @Mieleaustralia etc but when it comes to fridges and washing machines I love @fisherandpaykel! They legit last years and get the best ratings.”
Matthews shared a photo of several fridges and added, “We have bought a new @fisherandpaykel fridge as our space was limited. And the new @samsungau televisions … We also have a projector for movies as our walls are so big! I’ll keep you posted once we start installing.”
After answering several other questions, Matthews apologised for not being able to respond to all of them and shared a screenshot of the “many” questions she received.
While some questions had come from followers, at least two came from herself including the question about her preferred brands.
Anonymous Instagram account Celeb Spellcheck was the first to call out the model.
When asked about the awkward incident, Matthews told a fan the questions were legitimately from her followers and that she simply rewrote some because they were riddled with spelling mistakes.
She also denied it was a sponsored post and uploaded a photo of a receipt.
“FYI the brands I tagged in my Q&A were items I already purchased for full price. I’ll always disclose paid and gifted content,” she wrote.
Confidential has contacted Matthews for further comment.
It comes months after the mother-of-two made headlines last year for holding up a Jetstar flight during a trip to Sydney because she was finishing a plate of oysters at the airport.
