DOCO: I AM HEATH LEDGER
“There were always cameras around. A video camera or a polaroid camera or the film camera. That’s the only way I think of him: with the camera in the hand.” Heath Ledger loved the camera — in front of it and behind. He filmed himself incessantly over the years and these rare and insightful recordings are the backbone of this new documentary that has a very limited week-long release beginning May 11. The trailer for the film, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York last week, is haunting.
Ledger was intensely private and often captured on film looking serious and sometimes solemn in the years leading up to his January 2008 death, but the vision he created on his own appears to be just the opposite of that, allowing a view through a window not seen by many outside his inner circle. While some reviews, such as that from Vanity Fair’s Owen Gleiberman, feel there are still pieces of Ledger’s life that remain a mystery after the film, with some questions surrounding his death left unanswered, it’s a must see for fans.
Showing at select cinemas from May 11.

TELEVISION: GIRLBOSS
Based loosely on the real life story of Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso, Girlboss is an interesting comedy that veers away from the traditional sitcom. You will find yourself torn between loving and hating Sophia as she deals with the economic and social struggles of her early twenties while setting up what will eventually become a multi-million dollar retail empire. Unfortunately in the real world, things have turned sour for Nasty Gal with the business filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US. It’s an interesting look through the eyes of a young accidental entrepreneur who was terrified of adulthood — a place where “dreams go to die”. Hollywood heavyweight Charlize Theron is an executive producer of the show, the latest in a line of movie stars trying their hands at producing for the small screen.
