First Pyrmont, then Bankstown. Sydney-based steak and ribs restaurant chain Hurricane’s Grill continues to expand its empire, despite the original owners parting ways and dividing the business in half 10 years ago.

Born in Bondi in 1995 by David Goldberg and Tony Teixeira, Hurricane’s combined Teixeira’s Portuguese heritage with Goldberg South African heritage with Australian produce — and became a landmark restaurant.

However the original business partners Teixeira and Goldberg went their separate ways over 10 years ago, with Teixeira taking control of Bondi and Goldberg taking their CBD location.

Now, Goldberg and his wife Laura have opened up their new Hurricanes Grill location in Pyrmont. The site takes over from the Darling Harbour location which after 13 years closed due to the demolishment of the Harbourside Shopping Centre.

The new site on Bunn St is more of neighbourhood Hurricane’s eatery and serves up rotisserie style chicken, lamb and porchetta alongside the signature steaks, ribs and sauces.

It’s the first opening for the couple since Covid, and marks the continuation of the new direction of their business.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal the Hurricane’s team plan to add a restaurant in Bankstown in the coming weeks.

They will then reopen their Beijing store in September. They also have outposts in Dubai and Jakarta. While in Sydney they also have restaurants in Brighton-Le-Sands and Circular Quay.

“We didn’t anticipate the brand to be such a global ones,” Goldberg tells The Daily Telegraph. “We have customers come into our Sydney stores that recognise us from overseas.”

On the separation of the business, the former partners control the Hurricane’s intellectual property together, they own and manage their stores separately. The Bondi store is called Hurricane’s Grill and Bar.

“It’s challenging to say the least,” said Goldberg of the arrangement.

“We pretty much don’t interfere in each others business. With any break-up, marital or business, it’s a challenge but it’s been pretty good and we respect each other.”

Goldberg believes the key to the success has been the brand’s consistency.

“The steak and ribs are exactly the same as when you came last year. You know what you are going to get. They are big portions, and it’s set within a family, big group vibe,” she says. “There is a lot of high end restaurants and a lot of low end restaurants and we sit in the middle. ”
