The Boy from Oz is coming back – but he’s not ‘Hugh’ you think.
Hugh Sheridan is poised to step into one of the most famous Australian musical theatre roles and one which made Hugh Jackman an international superstar.
The Packed To The Rafters favourite is close to inking a deal that would see him in shake the maracas in a nationwide production of the musical based on the life of Peter Allen, with the show to tour Brisbane and Adelaide before heading to Sydney later this year.
Sheridan will replace Ethan Jones who recently performed the titular role in Perth.
Helmed by acclaimed theatre producer Tim Lawson, The Boy From Oz’s latest incarnation will mark something of a career breakthrough for Sheridan who was forced to drop out of a Sydney Festival production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch earlier this year after his casting rankled trans activists.
Contacted on Friday about the career-defining role, Sheridan was tight-lipped saying only that no contract has yet been signed.
However Confidential understands producers are set to announce his starring role next week.
Sheridan did, however, shed a little more light on his shock engagement to boyfriend Kurt Roberts earlier this month, with the singer-slash-actor popping the question — during a live performance of his Adelaide Fringe Festival show no less — after dating for just a few months.
Sheridan revealed to Confidential that he made the decision to fast-track the wedding after learning recently that his father Denis Sheridan, 76, is battling a terminal illness.
“When I found out I said to Kurt; ‘If we are going to get married then we should probably do it sooner rather than later’,” Sheridan said.
“Kurt said; ‘Okay sure’. Then I was thinking about it later and I thought; ‘What kind of proposal was that?’ so I went out and bought a ring and flew his family to be seated in the audience on the night. He had no idea. It was a really amazing moment.”
The boys will wed in Sydney on New Year’s Eve.
