HOUSE Rules got off to a dramatic start Monday night when the show’s interior design expert Carolyn Burns-McGrave was rushed to hospital after being knocked over by a timber beam.
The accident, which happened in a flash and took only five minutes of airtime, could have killed her.
“I feel very thankful to be able to tell the tale,” Burns-McGrave told Confidential.
“In the days and weeks that followed when I was asked over and over how I was feeling, I simply replied, ‘I’m just so happy to be alive!’ And that’s what it comes down to. Wrong place, wrong time, but it wasn’t MY time.”

Burns-McGrave walked away with a fractured sternum and two fractured ribs.
“I am so proud of this little body of mine,” she said. “I don’t look like a slim TV type but I am strong. My body withstood a huge blow.”
“I returned to the building site four days later. I went for a walk through, just with (the supervisor) in case I had a meltdown, but I was OK. I thought, yep, I can do this!”
