Heartbreak High’s Ayesha Madon moving to UK after final season wraps

Ayesha Madon shot to stardom as Amerie in Netflix’s Heartbreak High reboot. With the third and final season confirmed, the Sydneysider says it’s the ‘right time’ to take her career to London.

Ayesha Madon is ready for the next season of her life.

The 24-year-old shot directly into the limelight following the release of Netflix’s hit Heartbreak High reboot in 2022.

As the show’s brash leading lady, Amerie Wadia, Madon went stratospheric. And fast.

In May, Netflix confirmed the juggernaut series had been renewed for a third and final season. “It’s a bit sad because it’s a little goodbye, but it’s the perfect time to wrap up,” Madon said.

“I feel like art needs to be really intentional. Obviously there’s monetary value associated with Heartbreak High and I definitely think it could be one of those shows that continues to make money.

“I’m really glad that our writers put so much value on narrative and decided it’s the right time to close it, rather than waiting to not get renewed. That way we can wrap things up correctly and intentionally. I think it’s gonna be a great one.”

“It’s a real privilege in this country to have an Australian-made series do well around the world. It’s really special and rare.”

Today (Friday), Madon releases the second single from her forthcoming EP.

The first, Eulogy, is fizzy electro-pop track about this “tumultuous” phase of her early 20s and what she hopes to be remembered for.

“It’s honestly still unfolding as we speak,” Madon told Confidential of the EP’s “relationship-heavy” and “mental health” themes.

“I’m still discovering the sound as I go and figuring out what I want to say — which is really exciting as an emerging artist.”

While the musical theatre graduate from Sydney’s suburbs doesn’t “have a preference between acting and singing”, Madon revealed she’s “definitely going to jump ship to London after the show wraps”.

With the hit show preparing to wind up, now “feels like the right time,” to lean into her musical aspirations.

“I’m going to write songs with other creatives and build more of a music community over there, which is something I’ve been meaning to do for a long time,” she said.

“I don’t have a preference between acting and singing, no. I think they both work symbiotically to keep me creatively engaged.

“My focus at the moment has been more music, but who’s to say what the future holds?”

Asked whether she’d like to see the series continue to tell Australian stories with a fresh set of faces and characters, like infamous UK teen show Skins, Madon said: “That is the most flattering comparison. I love Skins!”

“You know what? Not particularly. But one of the most special things about Heartbreak High is that it gave a platform to so many young Aussie actors from different diasporas, and I think if that would continue it would be amazing.

“Giving platforms to young creatives is so important, especially right now.

“That’s the only thing I would say on that.”

Madon was the recipient of Elle Magazine’s 2024 Trailblazer Award and said she was “pretty G’d” to perform her new era of music for the first time at the award ceremony.
