Heartbreak High actor Brodie Townsend has been flying in and out of Sydney to read scripts for the highly anticipated second season of the Australian Netflix hit, and says we’re about to see a lot more of his character Ant Vaughn.
Speaking to The Daily Telegraph backstage of Michael Le Sordo’s Monday night show at Australian Fashion Week, Townsend said the week is a bit of a mini reunion for him and his castmates.
“I’m staying with James [Majoos] at the moment, we’re all in the same hotel for fashion week, so it’s a perfect lead up into filming,” the Perth-based actor said.
In the first season of the rebooted ‘90s teen drama, Ant was a supporting character to leads Ayesha Maddon (Amerie), James Majoos (Darren), and Chloe Hayden (Quinni).
We don’t learn much about the character, except that he’s Spider’s best mate, and once had a sexual relationship with Darren which his mother doesn’t approve of. As a result, she makes him go to church a lot.
“We’re about to start filming very soon,” Townsend continued.
“We’ll see a bit more of Ant, and learn some funny things about him. There’s definitely more to him. We’ve been reading the scripts and there’s some things people will be really surprised by.”
Playing a slightly lesser known role has sheltered Townsend from the kind of fame that his castmates woke up to after the series ranked in the streamer’s Top 10 in more than 40 countries, racking up 33 million hours of viewing time in a month.
“No one expected it to be what it was. We obviously had high hopes, but it was crazy. I feel I’ve had the perfect viewing point. For Chloe, James and Ayesha, it would’ve been like woah. It still was like that for me, but I could watch them go through it first before it started happening to me.”
The success of the first season means the cast is feeling the “responsibility” of carrying their now beloved characters.
“It’s a very different experience,” Townsend said. “When we were filming before, it was like high school. We were such idiots, So I really hope we can just all be together again because we live in different parts of the country. We started a group chat and we all still hang out, but it’s not the same.”
Josh Heuston, who plays Dusty, was in the audience of the Lo Sordo show to support Townsend, who modelled for the esteemed designer.
“I love Michael and he’s dressed me for some events, so I was honoured when he asked me,” Townsend said. “I’m not a model so I’m a little bit nervous, but I love this feeling.”
