Australian electronic queen Alison Wonderland will be putting on a one-night-only Sydney concert, following the shock cancellation of Groovin’ In The Moo festival which she was due to headline.
“AUSTRALIA ONE NIGHT ONLY,” the Sydney-born dance music producer, DJ, and singer shared to Instagram on Wednesday night.
“Seeing all these festivals getting cancelled makes me sad,” Alison wrote. “I was looking forward to being back in Australia for Groovin … so f**k it, I’m gonna head to Sydney for one night and play a show in April 24 (Anzac Day eve).”
Los Angeles-based Alex Sholler (who is better known as her stage name) was the headliner, with Hot Dub Time Machine, The Kooks, Mallrat, San Cisco, Stephen Sanchez, Armani White, Jet and The Grogans also on the bill.
The travelling festival that was to start in Adelaide on April 25 and play Canberra’s Exhibition Park the following day was cancelled for 2024 just a week after its line up announcement.
Organisers took the extraordinary step of revealing the news on its website and social media, citing poor ticket sales as the reason on Valentine’s Day.
“We are extremely disappointed to announce that the Groovin’ the Moo 2024 tour has been forced to cancel,” the post read, with artists understood to have been notified just hours earlier.
Groovin’ In The Moo was the first domino to fall in the collapse of Australia’s live music scene this year, which was swiftly followed by the cancellation of Splendour In The Grass in March.
Alison Wonderland has dominated the electronic dance music scene and global festival circuit for the better part of a decade.
“I won’t be able to bring the full stage set up as planned for GTM … it’s just me travelling with no crew so it’s going to be super stripped back club vibes,” Alison’s post continued.
“It will be my first club set back in oz since Covid so you know we’re gonna go hard.”
First release tickets for the show at The Ivy on April 24, priced at $26.51, sold out in less than 12 hours.
Second release tickets are still on sale.
Both fans and artists have been quick to praise the practical move to support the struggling Australian live music industry.
“Alison to the rescue!!” one fan wrote.
The 37-year-old headlined Coachella in April 2023, unveiling her musical alias Whyte Fang while heavily pregnant with her first child.
A regular at clubs around Sydney in 2011 – including the infamous Candy’s Apartment, where she also worked as the doorwoman – Sholler caught the eye of EMI Records, who signed her as Alison Wonderland. As Alison, she became one of Australia’s most successful dance exports.
