Former NRL star Beau Ryan shares his lockdown parenting tips

Former NRL player Beau Ryan says lockdown has taught him a big lesson after his children began to notice when he wasn’t “mentally” around.

If Sydney’s ongoing lockdowns have taught Beau Ryan anything, it’s that being around and being present with his kids are two different things.

The former rugby league player is the father to Remi; 8, and Jesse; 4. While the pandemic has meant he’s spent more time physically at home, his kids notice when he’s not mentally with them.

“My kids know if I’m distracted,” Ryan said. “Being there and being present are two different things and it’s something I’ve tried to work on.”

“I also find spending one-on-one time with kids, individually helps. Because my daughter is calm and reserved where as my son is like me, a ball of energy. So they like to do different things.”

The Amazing Race host, who also fills on Studio 10 and on the Kyle and Jackie O show, adds that the extra time at home has also made me appreciate the work his wife, Kara, does.

“I’m still working at the moment, so Kara is with the kids the most. Seeing what she does for them, you do realise who the most valuable person in our family is,” he said.

“But I do try to share the load around the house as much as I can.”

Ryan has also become a Hello Fresh ambassador, and adds, cooking has been his way of contributing. “It gives me the variety and confidence to help out,” he said.

“And it’s also a nice way to get the kids involved and gives us all something to do!”

While this Sunday’s Father’s Day won’t involve a BBQ with Ryan’s extend family, he adds he’s looking forward to it. “Look everyday is the same at the moment, but I am excited to get some more socks and undies!”
