A Sydney park is being turned into the fantasy world of Asgard ahead of filming for the new Chris Hemsworth Thor flick.

Centennial Park is being transformed into the sci-fi fantasy landscape of Asgard as an interstellar stage is rapidly getting set for Chris Hemsworth’s latest blockbuster Thor flick to shoot in the Harbour City.

Production crew have been hard at work transforming the central city parklands into Odin’s realm with Hollywood superstar Hemsworth teaming up with director Taika Waititi to reprise his Marvel role in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Filming officially got under way on Tuesday with the production based at Sydney’s Fox Studios for the coming months.

Natalie Portman has been based in Sydney since last year in preparation to play Jane Foster in the movie with her husband, Benjamin Millepied, currently shooting another big movie in NSW, a modern-day reimagining of celebrated opera Carmen.

Jaimie Alexander, who plays Lady Sif in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is the latest cast member to touch down in Sydney for mandatory quarantine.

Matt Damon meanwhile is due to finish his quarantine at the weekend.

Thor: Love and Thunder is also set to star Christian Bale, Chris Pratt and Tessa Thompson.

The decision to shoot in NSW is a huge coup for the local industry, which has become a hub for productions with Hollywood shut down due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

It comes after Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy shot US TV series Nine Perfect Strangers in Byron Bay and a raft of other movies have been based here, including Rose Byrne comedy Seriously Red.

“I am delighted to welcome the filming of Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder to Sydney,” NSW Arts Minister Don Harwin told The Daily Telegraph.

“It will support more than 1,000 jobs on this major international production and inject over $120 million in to the NSW economy, secured through the NSW Government’s Made in NSW fund. The State has world-class crews and production facilities, extraordinary talent – and Marvel choosing to film here shows NSW really is the place for every story.”

On Tuesday, Hemsworth shared a number of images of cast and crew to social media as cameras began rolling on set while also making a statement on the date we celebrate Australia Day.

“A beautiful start to our shoot today with a Welcome to Country ceremony from the Gamay dancers of the Gadigal and Bidiagal Nation and performance and karakia by Maori dancers from Te Aranganui,” Hemsworth wrote in an Instagram post.

“Indigenous Australians may be just as proud of this country, but many see January 26th as a date signifying the beginning of dispossession, disease epidemics, frontier violence, destruction of culture, exploitation, abuse, separation of families and subjection to policies of extreme social control. Let’s begin the healing and stand together in unity and support with our First Nations people with solidarity and compassion. Let’s find a date where all Australians can celebrate this beautiful country together.”

Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled for a cinematic release in May next year.
