A former Today Show producer who is facing sexual assault charges has made a surprise appearance in the Emmy award-winning Netflix docuseries Cheer.
Eagle-eyed fans of the series, which follows a competitive US college cheer squad, noticed Tom Nicol alongside Today Show entertainment reporter Brooke Boney in episode one of season two which aired last month.
Nicol, who strongly denies the sexual assault allegations, is seen with Boney preparing for an interview filmed two years ago with Navarro College cheerleaders, including Jerry Harris who was later arrested in Illinois on unrelated child sexual abuse imagery charges.
Both Nicol and Boney documented their US trip on social media, with each posting photos of Harris and his co-stars prior to the 22-year-old’s arrest. The show addresses Harris’ legal scandal throughout season two and he remains in police custody.
Closer to home, Nicol, 32, is fighting police allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman at his Bondi home last year.
While the episode was filmed two years ago, the season aired in January of this year without mention of the charges Nicol is fighting.
Police allege the attack, which Nicol “strongly’’ denies, occurred after the pair had been out on the night of January 29 and returned to his home.
The woman was taken by a friend to Royal North Shore Hospital in the early hours of the morning and police were contacted.
The court heard the pair, who had a common group of friends, were drunk and drugs could have been involved.
“The allegations are strongly denied. The charge will be vigorously defended in court,’’ Nicol previously said in a statement.
The Daily Telegraph has contacted Netflix for comment.
