THE contestants on the upcoming series of My Kitchen Rules could be the best chefs the series has ever seen — because the Seven network is reaching out to well-established cooks.

Confidential can reveal that the reality TV juggernaut is breaking from the traditional casting process, and contacting keen cooks, foodies and food bloggers via Instagram.

One dab hand in the kitchen, who did not make the cut for the upcoming series, said that producers came to him through his large online following.

“They saw my Instagram which has about 10,000 followers, it’s all food stuff. They asked if I’d be keen to audition for the show, which I did with my girlfriend,” the would-be reality star said.

After his audition, however, all contact from the network ceased.

“They didn’t get in touch to let us know either way for two months. It made planning difficult — I considered missing an overseas holiday for the opportunity to be on the show, which ultimately didn’t happen,” he added.

The network is still looking for chefs with TV potential, with the more traditional route of applying via a casting website still available. Applicants must detail the dynamic of their relationship, their hobbies and interests, what three courses they would cook in an Instant Restaurant round and if the lure of the prize money or the fame appeals more.

Seven could not be contacted for comment.
