Unlucky in love, Erin Molan took some convincing to walk down the aisle.
It was Molan’s four-year-old daughter Eliza that convinced the popular TV and radio personality to take part in a self-wedding stunt for her 2DAY FM breakfast show on Tuesday.
However, the emotion of knowing that her father, late Senator Jim Molan who died in January, wouldn’t be present for the real thing proved the most difficult part to overcome.
The “Wedding for One” at Doltone House on Darling Island was devised as an ode to Molan’s many listeners who’ve divorced, broken up en route to the altar (as Molan and ex-fiance Sean Ogilvy did 2021), or are perpetually – and happily – single.
Eight single women were invited to participate alongside Molan.
“It took a lot of convincing to get me involved,” she told The Daily Telegraph. “One of the things I thought about a lot once I knew we were losing Dad was that he’ll never get to walk me down the aisle.”
She teared up while recounting a memory of her cousin’s wedding, in which her father joked about the speech he’d make at her own.
“I thought this might be too hard to do, a bit too close to home, and too soon. I didn’t want to be emotional thinking ‘it’s meant to be a fun segment, everyone’s going to think I’m a flog’ if I’m in tears crying about marrying myself, when it’s more about Dad,” Molan said.
When Molan first heard about sologamy (marrying oneself) she thought it was sad.
“I thought ‘sweet Jesus if my life wasn’t sad enough, it’s about to get a whole lot worse’, but my little girl was so excited,” she said.
The duo practised the walk for about two months
“It’s something fun for her, given the likelihood is as a 39-year-old single mother, I’ll probably never get married.”
Although Molan was in the dating game in early 2022, the Sky News host is now unattached.
“I don’t think you could pay me enough to entice me to date right now,” she said.
“The thought of it — I’m not going to say it would make me physically ill — but my focus is being the best mum I can be and getting myself into a really good place. That takes a lot of work.”
Although she can no longer speak with her dad every day, Molan said she always considers the standards he set for her.
“I’m going to make sure that the next love that I have is something that is worthy. I’m at a stage now in my life, where unless it’s something incredible that really fills my cup, then it’s just not worth it if it takes my peace.”
That said, the solo wedding was “a lot of fun”.
She wore a sheer dress by Penrith Bridal that was much more see-through than Molan had envisaged.
“But you know what, if it’s the only wedding dress I ever wear (while I can still get away with sheer), I’ll rock that every day of the week.”
