BROADCASTER Em Rusciano says the radio ratings system is archaic and needs to be overhauled.

“I think there needs to be a better system than dropping a small amount of books in an area and averaging the numbers of whoever fills them out,” Rusciano said.

“It doesn’t measure how a lot of people consume radio today. I think the radio rating system is archaic and it need to be overhauled. It needs to be addressed.”

Radio survey ratings are based on diaries sent to certain households. There are eight surveys, which advertisers pay close attention to, each year.

Melbourne-based Rusciano has a breakfast radio show on 2DAY-FM. Ed Kavalee will co-host the program with her in 2018.

“We are the No. 1 engaged breakfast radio show in Australia on Facebook and Instagram,” she said. “On the social media side, we’re killing it. We’re able to shape and mould in real time rather than wait every eight weeks to see whether people like you or not.

“As a needy performer, I want that instant gratification,” Rusciano said, laughing.

Meanwhile, Rusciano has announced a second show in her Evil Queen stand-up comedy tour. She will perform at the Palais Theatre on February 16 and 17.

Rusciano says the show, based on movie villains, helped shape her personality.

“They taught me about resilience, about being upfront and honest with who you are, and going for what you want and not being shy to announce it to everyone.”

Tickets are available from Ticketmaster.
