Australia’s Got Talent judge and former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger says Israel Folau’s anti-gay messaging is not what religion should be about.

Scherzinger’s grandfather is a Catholic bishop and she is a devout Christian, making the sign of the cross and saying a silent prayer before she ate as she spoke with Confidential.

She said issues such as the anti-gay posts that cost Folau his career upset her because they cast a shadow on a religion that is meant to be about love.

“It makes me sad because some people get a negative connotation about religion,” she said. “In my beliefs and in my teaching as who am I, and even the teachings of Jesus Christ, he who does not sin may cast the first stone — and no one can.

“So it’s not for me to judge anyone else. And also, in the end, God is love. It’s about love and accepting. That (Folau’s posts) is not generating that.”

The 41-year-old uses religion and mental awareness to stay mentally well.

She is a recovered bulimic who has spent most of her life in the spotlight, and said it was only through “time, experience, love, heartache, heartbreak, struggles, getting through it, not giving up,” that she finally feels at peace with who she is.

“Over time with experience and age comes more of an acceptance. I’m not as hard on myself,” she told Confidential.

“I do it through meditation, through prayer. People go to the gym to work on their bodies but you have to work to keep yourself mentally and spiritually happy.”

“I exercise every day, it’s more for my state of mind, and I have a life coach, I have a pastor, I have my mum, I have my girlfriends and I have a psychologist. So I’ve got it covered.”

But that’s not to say she doesn’t have her own insecurities.

Even as one of the world’s most beautiful women not even she is immune to a bad photo.

“Sometimes these paps they take these sh**ty photos that you don’t realise they’re taking and you’re like ‘damn that’s the worst angle, I didn’t even know I look like that’,” she said.

“But you know what? Eff it, it’s like what are you going to do?

“Everybody is caught off guard and pictured at the wrong angle at the wrong time and the wrong lighting.

“It’s not always going to be perfect.”

Scherzinger will head back to LA after more filming for Australia’s Got Talent, which airs Sundays at 7pm and Mondays at 7.30pm.
