Former Queen of pop Debra Byrne has slammed her former Young Talent Time co-stars, years after making bombshell allegations over her treatment on the show.
Byrne, 64, who was a founding cast member of the 1970s variety show, took aim at former show host Johnny Young and performers Tina Arena and Dannii Minogue after the trio appeared on Sunday night’s 50th anniversary special on Channel 10.
In 2014, the Logie award winner claimed she was sexually abused while working on the show during separate incidents in 1971 when she was a teenager, which left her “a very disturbed girl”.
During her appearance on Channel 10’s Young Talent Time Unmasked on Sunday, Arena, 53, said the show was a safe environment as the cast was protected.
“What’s really important to point out as well is the role that family played in that show. We were all part of a family, we all grew together. If we made mistakes, we made mistakes together. It was wonderful, it was a family and that was something that was very much guided by yourself,” the Sorrento Moon singer said.
“What we have unfortunately seen today, and we can see that with Britney Spears’ story, this girl was not protected. We were. We were [protected] by our own families and we were protected by you. That is a gift.”
Byrne criticised Arena’s comments.
“...It has nothing to do with luck. It takes mindfulness, organisation, vigilance, intelligence, awareness and an understanding that wherever children gather there is likely to be an abuser. For me there were many,” Byrne wrote.
Confidential has contacted Channel 10, Young and Arena for comment.
Byrne, who appeared on the show for four years before launching a singing career, previously made claims on Facebook while calling on witnesses to come forward.
During one alleged incident, she claims she was “digitally raped” by a Young Talent Time crew member.
She claims another incident occurred while filming a commercial.
Byrne claims one of her attackers was previously convicted for “carnal knowledge” and given a 12-month good behaviour bond.
Anna Young, who is Young’s daughter, previously urged Byrne to report any incidents to the police.
“He would like her to go to the police, if she feels so strongly about it, rather than put it on Facebook,” Anna previously said.
“He feels if any woman has been wronged in any way - he’s very protective - go to the police, don’t put it on Facebook. We wish her all the best, if she does feel there is something that happened to her I agree with my dad, she really needs to go to the police.”
