'Little frightening': Deborra-Lee Furness on new life

It is the new era of Deborra-Lee Furness: Life after Hugh.

Five months after announcing her split from husband of nearly three decades, Hugh Jackman, Furness is back with her first acting role since 2016.

And she’s looking forward to what the future brings, both professionally and personally.

“It is kind of exciting,” Furness, 68, told The Daily Telegraph ahead of the release of her new film, Force of Nature: The Dry 2.

“You know what, change, transition, evolution is a little frightening and we are all a bit scared of it but I think it is probably our greatest gift.”

Furness and Jackman were regarded one of Hollywood’s great marriage success stories until they announced their split in September.

They met on set of Australian series Corelli in 1995 and have two now adult children together – Oscar and Ava.

Furness joined co-stars including Eric Bana and Jacqueline McKenzie at the Sydney premiere of The Dry 2 at the Open Air cinema at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair on Tuesday.

Earlier this week, after flying in from the US, Furness was photographed wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the words, “S**t Happens”.

Her last acting gig was 2016 TV miniseries Hyde and Seek with Matt Nable, Zoe Ventoura, Mandy McElhinney and Tai Hara.

“For me it was a strong female ensemble cast, a great director, I love Eric (Bana), it was coming home to Australia to shoot in the wilds,” the long-time US based star said of signing up to The Dry 2.

“There were so many appealing factors for me and a great script by Jane Harper and director Robert Connolly.”

The film also stars Robin McLeavy, Sisi Stringer, Anna Torv, Lucy Ansell, Richard Roxburgh, Jeremy Lindsay Taylor, Tony Briggs and Lucy Ansell.

The Dry 2 is based on the second book in author Jane Harper’s trilogy based on Federal Agent Aaron Falk and opens in cinemas nationally on February 8.

It tells the story of five women who go on a corporate hiking retreat but just four return.

“You’re in for a great ride. I love a mystery,” Furness said.

“Even reading the script, there’s so many twists and turns. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. And it is beautiful.

The lighting, which is very minimal, it just creates this ambience and it is special.”
