Daniel Johns and Luke Steele release first single as ‘Dreams’ ahead of Coachella
AFTER a decade in the making, former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns has finally released the first single in his collaboration with Empire of the Sun’s Luke Steele.

IT is not surprising Daniel Johns looks to have a lot on his mind.
After a decade in the making, the former Silverchair frontman has finally released the first single in his collaboration with Empire of the Sun’s Luke Steele.
And it is just a few weeks before the duo play at one of the world’s biggest music festival’s, Coachella.
Johns and Steele’s collaboration is titled Dreams and the first single — No One Defeats Us — was released last week, providing fans a welcome taste of what is to come.
“No One Defeats Us says lyrically what our goal is, it’s a journey into our vision of the future,” Johns has said of the track.
“It’s a very simple song, it has no chorus, it feels like a mantra. When Luke and I are making music, everything disappears and we become like teenage explorers, we go into our world, we are so brave when we are together, we try things that we might not try for other people.
“This song is not really what people would expect from Luke and I, we’re not making super-complex music with lots of unusual chords this time. We are trying to paint this really intricate pulse. We find what resonates and try to make that pulse stronger.”
Dreams are on the Coachella bill in California next month, sharing the stage with the likes of Kygo, Jamiroquai and St Vincent.
The duo will also perform as part of the Vivid Sydney Festival line-up in May.
Of the long awaited project, Steele has said: “Me and Dan excel and struggle on similar levels.
“We have so much passion and we are so ambitious. That song came from a time when we were beginning the band and we needed something deep. I wanted to build a gang — like a gang of the future. We want the band to be for the common man, the underdog, the homeless, the person who shows love to his neighbour.”
Empire of the Sun
Silverchair, fronted by Johns and with bassist Chris Joannou and Ben Gillies on drums, is one of the biggest bands of Australian music of recent decades.
Suggestions of a permanent split were sparked earlier this month when Joannou announced he was selling off most of his instruments from his days touring with the band.
