IT was almost as if the NRL players at the Dally M Awards last night were the “handbags” to the WAGs with the better halves of our rugby league stars well and truly stealing the show.
It was sequins at 20 paces on the red carpet at The Star in Sydney, with the cream of the NRL crop putting their best foot forward at rugby league’s night of nights.
Following on from the Brownlow Medal in Melbourne on Monday night, Fox Sports presenter Jess Yates had earlier said the NRL WAGs would give their AFL counterparts a run for their money in the style stakes. And they did.
Terry Biviano, a regular on the red carpet, was among the showstoppers in a Mariam Seddiq red number alongside husband and former Roosters player Anthony Minichiello.
Former Newcastle Knights player Alex McKinnon and fiancee Teigan Power looked the perfect pair, with Power dressed in an exquisite metallic number with keyhole detail.
FoxSports presenters Yates, Yvonne Sampson, Lara Pitt and Hannah Hollis were also an impressive foursome, working both on and off the red carpet.
Sports presenter Emma Freedman was coming up roses in a gown by Australian couturier Lillian Khallouf, while Phoebe Burgess, wife of Rabbitoh Sam, said she was channelling “Maleficent” vibes with a shiny black Alex Perry number.
No one was quite sure why Tegan Martin was present on the night, but she made sure she didn’t go unnoticed in a Barbie-inspired candy-coloured look that and gave off retro vibes.
No doubt there will be many sore heads this morning, with the Dally M being the last official engagement of the NRL season ahead of Sunday’s grand final showdown between the North Queensland Cowboys and Melbourne Storm.
