Hit musical comedy The Wedding Singer arrives in Adelaide

Big hair, mullets and leg warmers are set to make a return to the stage when internationally acclaimed musical The Wedding Singer kicks off at the State Theatre next week.

Based on the hilarious Adam Sandler film of the same and set in the 1980s, the show stars NIDA graduate Christian Charisiou as Robbie Hart — the role made famous by Sandler — and Teagan Wouters as Julia Sullivan.

“It’s incredibly humbling and exhilarating to be one of the first touring musicals post 2020 and bring live theatre back,” Charisiou said.

“Sharing the electric, hilarious and heartwarming energy of The Wedding Singer with audiences around Australia is truly a gift.”

“To perform my first major musical for my home state is nothing short of a bucket list moment for me. I’m so excited to share Robbie Hart and his mullet with Sydney.

“The show is the film, only bigger and better! Everyone involved is giving it their all to make sure The Wedding Singer is the best night of Musical theatre in town.”

Covid safety measures will be in place in line with government guidelines and regulations.

After a successful run in Melbourne and Adelaide, the production begins on July 1 with an original soundtrack put together by musical director Daniel Puckey.

Producer David Venn said while navigating theatre during the pandemic has been challenging, it’s been worth it.

“Touring a musical during a pandemic is no small feat, but we couldn’t be happier with the responses we’ve received across the country,” Venn said.

We’re creating much needed employment opportunities for Australian creatives, driving visitation to key cities and helping to revive the Australian theatre industry. We can’t wait to share the fun of this feel-good musical and party with Sydney audiences.”

The Tony Award-nominated musical is directed by Alister Smith.
