After being dismissed by some in the industry as dead in the water, Channel 7 is pushing ahead with a revamped Australian Idol.
The network has begun the early stages of auditions in “the most iconic nationwide search for a superstar”.
The format, which last aired on Channel 10 in 2009, will make its debut on Seven and 7plus in 2023.
“Hopefuls aged between 15 and 28 are invited to showcase their talents from anywhere in Australia by either uploading a video or singing face-to-face with an Australian Idol producer for a chance to proceed to the judges’ audition round of the competition,” a statement read.
Idol of course is regarded one of the most successful reality formats in Australian television history.
It spawned the careers of some of our top music artists, including Guy Sebastian, Stan Walker (pictured), Casey Donovan, Jessica Mauboy, Matt Corby, Shannon Noll and Ricki Lee Coulter.
In 2020, when Seven announced the coup of signing the format, station boss James Warburton said: “Australian Idol, it has to be at the scale of what you think back to the scale of what it was. It has to be on serious steroids and deliver that big scale entertainment.”
