CATE Blanchett and Tim Minchin were left empty-handed after being nominated for gongs at the Tony Awards in New York.
Blanchett was bypassed for a best actress award for her debut Broadway performance of the Sydney Theatre Company’s production of The Present. Earlier, Minchin missed out on the original score Tony Award for Groundhog Day. Laurie Metcalf for A Doll’s House, Part 2 won the best actress in a leading role in a play Tony at Sunday’s ceremony at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
Earlier, host Kevin Spacey arrived on the red carpet to host the awards.
The House Of Cards star, who has won a Tony along with two Oscars, is expected to sing and dance his way through the night, as well as reprise his role as Frank Underwood.
Scarlett Johansson, Orlando Bloom and John Lithgow are also among the actors presenting at the 71st annual awards that celebrate the best of Broadway theatre.
An impressive group of Australians, led by Cate Blanchett and Tim Minchin, are in the hunt at this year’s awards.
Blanchett’s Broadway debut in the Sydney Theatre Company’s production The Present has netted her a nomination for best actress in a leading role in a play, but the Melbourne-born dual Oscar winner and freshly minted Queen’s birthday honours recipient isn’t the frontrunner in a category stacked with big names.
Minchin, no stranger to the Tonys after Matilda the Musical’s 12 nominations in 2013, is set for a big night with his musical adaptation Groundhog Day, based on the Bill Murray comedy film of the same name, receiving seven nominations.
The presenters are the regular mix of Broadway and Hollywood, including Orlando Bloom, Tina Fey, Scarlett Johansson, Anna Kendrick, Sara Bareilles, Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, Mark Hamill, Allison Janney, John Legend, David Oyelowo and Sarah Paulson.
