CAMERON McEvoy, the pin-up boy of the Aussie swim team, has shocked fans by confirming this week he has had a “friendly and amicable” breakup with his girlfriend Violet Atkinson.
McEvoy, 24, said his split is “nowhere near as hostile” as the bitter bust-up between teammates Mitch Larkin and Emily Seebohm, where Seebohm accused Larkin
of cheating, a claim he has furiously denied.

“It’s nothing like that situation, I can assure you,” McEvoy said of his breakup which, he said, was instead due to the couple being on “different trajectories”.
“Violet’s career is taking her more and more to Sydney and Melbourne.
“My training base is on the Gold Coast and I am happy here and we just decided that our relationship’s dynamic was more suited to just being very, very good friends.”
McEvoy also denied rumours there was a third party behind the breakup and shot down suggestions he ended the relationship to focus on his swimming following a disappointing Rio Olympics campaign where, despite going into the 100m freestyle as the reigning world record holder, he placed seventh behind surprise winner Kyle Chalmers.
Two years out from Tokyo 2020, McEvoy recently made the shock decision to dump longtime coach Richard Scarce and switch to Chris Nesbit’s squad at The Southport School on the Gold Coast.
But he insists his split with Atkinson is “unrelated”.
“It’s not an issue,” he said. “When we were together I was swimming really well.”
Atkinson, who has appeared at Flemington’s Birdcage all week as part of her role as a self-styled influencer and fashion blogger, also denied she held any grudges over the split.
