TOP Aussie muso Tones and I will perform at the opening ceremony of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Sydney tonight but the Dance Monkey superstar’s passion for the sport does not end there.
The avid basketball fan, who played as a kid growing up and is the number one ticket holder at Melbourne United, is looking at investment opportunities around the game.
“To co-own a team, absolutely, that would be incredible,” Tones and I, whose real name is Toni Watson, told The Daily Telegraph.
“I have mainly put all of my money into properties and investing that way but I am kind of trying to have a look around and see what else I can do but it really has to align with a passion of mine otherwise I am not very interested.”
Tones and I will perform her new single, Charlie, at the opening ceremony at Qudos Bank Arena tonight ahead of the Australian Opals game against France.
She described her passion for basketball as being almost religious.
“Being young, I remember Primary School specifically, it was kind of my way to just figure out what my thing was, to feel like I belonged somewhere,” she said.
“For the most part it taught me discipline and taught me willpower and taught me resilience and strength. The only reason I ever stopped playing basketball was to become a busker.”
The Opals will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing Tokyo Olympic campaign marred by the abrupt departure of superstar Liz Cambage in the lead up to the games.
Australia won silver at the last World Cup in Spain, behind the powerful Team USA.
Australia’s chances of medalling in Sydney have received a significant boost with the incredible comeback of Opals legend Lauren Jackson. The 41-year-old star player might not be able to perform at her previous best but Jackson’s size and presence will make a big difference.
