CRITICS were divided when Shane and Clayton Jacobson’s controversial comedy Kenny was released more than a decade ago.

So the fact some film reviewers have panned the siblings’ latest big screen offering, Brothers’ Nest, is water off a duck’s back so to speak.

“A lot of people might not remember David Stratton gave Kenny two stars and Margaret Pomeranz gave it four on the same show,” Clayton told Confidential.

“I was delighted because what they did was tell viewers quite categorically they need to go out and make up their own minds about the film and, of course, Australia did.” Kenny went on to gross millions at the box office and remains a cult comedy classic.

Brothers’ Nest is the siblings’ first collaboration since Kenny in 2006. With Clayton directing, it is a Coen brothers-style dark comedy — think Fargo — about siblings Jeff and Terry, with the film attracting rave reviews at the South by Southwest Festival when it premiered there earlier this year.

Locally though, critics have been divided. “Maybe it is just a personal mechanism from me but I honestly believe everyone is entitled to an opinion,” Clayton continued.

“We are all critics. I am a critic. If there has been a bad review, it is out of step with what we are hearing.”

With the film opening in cinemas this week, the Jacobson brothers have been travelling the country for screenings.

Doctor’s orders have forced the boys to do things the old-fashioned way with a whistlestop bus tour from one side of the country to the other.

The Jacobson bus stopped by Sydney yesterday after stops everywhere from Orange to Wagga Wagga, Nambucca Heads, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane.

It was an order from his doctor after Shane Jacobson snapped his achilles tendon and suffered blood clots on a recent trip to Marrakesh.

“My doctor said I absolutely cannot get on an aeroplane,” the actor said. “He said if I mess with this I could lose my life. The doctor didn’t say I couldn’t get on a bus.

“When the doctor said I couldn’t get on a plane, I thought it was fantastic as it gave us an excuse and a reason to do this by road.”

As for any future Kenny projects, the character is unlikely to make a return to the big or small screen any time soon although there is always a chance.

“Never say never, the little boy from Kenny, there could be a story in him one day,” Shane said.
