SEVEN’S much anticipated Barnaby Joyce baby exclusive failed to live up to the hype in the ratings stakes.
The network’s flagship news and current affairs program, Sunday Night, was the ninth most watched program nationally, registering a five city metro market audience of 631,000.
The good news is the figure was well up on last week’s viewership of 427,000.
“Seven would be pretty disappointed with that number after paying that much for the interview, which attracted plenty of pre-show hype which just did not translate into a large enough viewing audience,” commentator and Mediaweek editor James Manning said.
Channel 7 paid $150,000 for the tell all interview with former Deputy Prime Minister Joyce and former media adviser partner Vikki Campion.
Joyce left his wife of more than 20 years, Natalie, after having an affair with Campion, with whom he has a six week old son, Sebastian.
Audiences turned their backs on all current affairs programs though with 60 Minutes and the Sunday Project registering just over 400,000 viewers each.
The most watched program of the night was Seven News with an audience of 1.17 million viewers, followed by Nine News at 1.06 million, House Rules at 882,000, The Voice with 816,000 and Mystery Road’s 786,000.
