Remembering Diana: The People's Princess

More than two decades later, controversial Aussie paparazzo Darryn Lyons says he is still careful what he says about the late Princess Diana’s death.

“There are times I fear for what I say,” the photographer told Confidential.

“I don’t think that we will ever get to the bottom of the truth of the story. I don’t even think her sons know … they would have been told the story but it isn’t necessarily the truth.”

Princess Diana died at the age of 36 in an unexplained car accident in Paris.

An inquest, at which Lyons gave evidence, later ruled her death was the result of speed, no seatbelts and an intoxicated driver.

Lyons ran Big Pictures photo agency in London at the time and received images of the late Princess on that night that he has indicated he will never sell.

“I have huge questions about the Princess of Wales death,” Lyons said.

“I was right in the centre of it. I fear for what I say because they are the most powerful family in the world and I know what I went through at the particular time and was extremely loud because there were some very funny things.

“It was pretty scary stuff. I have no proof that the Princess of Wales was murdered, but I do think the conspiracy theory will be around forever and will probably grow. Everyone says it was a tragic accident … some very strange things happened that night and I was a part of many of the strange things that happened that night.”

The colourful photographer, who has opened The Lyons Gallery in Paddington, which includes several pictures of Princess Diana, the Queen and several iconic celebrities, remains careful with his words.

“I would never say that she was murdered. I would say I have many questions still unanswered and I think the world has many questions unanswered as to why a lot of things happened. It may not have even been murder. We still don’t really know.”

Lyons described the British royals in 2018 as “an incredible PR machine”.

Of Princes Harry and Will, he added: “I think those boys have done an incredible job for the royal brand. I think they have brought it into the 21st century with great guidance behind them and not really from the old royals. They really have taken her legacy to a different level.”
