Aussie film directors, RackaRacka twins, say they could have ‘done money grabs’

RackaRacka twins Michael and Danny Philippou set to shock as the brothers return with new horror flick, Bring Her Back.

The Philippou brothers would be forgiven had they sold out and taken the quick buck.

Instead, they followed their huge success with breakout horror hit Talk To Me, with another Aussie film, Bring Her Back.

“We could have done money grabs and things like that but than is not why we do this,” Michael Philippou told The Daily Telegraph.

“We were in an awesome position after Talk To Me came out that really so many doors had opened and we could really whatever we wanted to do, we were able to do.

“We were so fortunate to have that but to make something that comes from the soul, what feels right, that you are going to put 100 per cent energy into and know that it is authentic to you, that is the most important stuff.”

Twin brothers Michael and Danny Philippou were internationally lauded off the back of Talk To Me, which was made on a comparatively low budget of $4.5 million and grossed close to $100 million at the global box office.

They were signed on to helm the next big budget Street Fighter flick but opted to base production on Bring Her Back out of their home town of Adelaide.

Hollywood is still very much behind them though with A24 and Sony Pictures backing the new movie that is in cinemas nationally from Thursday.

“Always I am going to be drawn back home,” Danny said ahead of attending the Australian premiere at Sydney’s.

“It feels more comfortable here, I feel really supported here. It feels like a privilege to be able to go, ‘oh we can bring stuff back, we can work from people here, and that feels really amazing. Growing up, there was such a cultural cringe with Australian cinemas and Australian movies and I love that art, this could be a thing that turns it maybe for a young audience. I am really proud of Australian films.”

Bring Her Back stars British actor Sally Hawkins in the lead role alongside Emmy Award winning teenage actor Billy Barratt, Sora Wong and Jonah Wren Philips.

The Philippou brothers became known first off the back of their successful RackaRacka stunts.

After Bring Her Back, they’ve been working on a feature documentary on deathmatch wrestling and will then go into production on Talk 2 Me.
