When Sydney muso Eddie Benjamin needs someone to talk to, he calls pop superstar Justin Bieber.
The Aussie artist is a name, face, and voice you need to know as one of our most exciting stars on the rise on the international stage who just happens to count Bieber as one of his closest friends.
“Honestly, when anything really heavy happens, I feel like he (Bieber) is one of the first people I get on the phone to,” Benjamin said.
“It is about finding that balance … he does think I work too much in a sense that I am so obsessed (with my music). I often find myself on the phone to him, in tears might I add. Definitely, you’ve got to have relationships where you can really clearly fall apart, otherwise I just don’t see the point in them and I love connecting to people like that. I can’t do the small talk.”
Benjamin, 21, grew up in Sydney’s east before moving to the US and signing to Epic Records and Sony Music.
Sia is a mentor — he describes her as an “aunt” figure — while Benjamin has written tracks with the likes of Shawn Mendes, Alessia Cara and Meghan Trainor and supported Bieber on his global tour.
He and American actor Maddie Ziegler ended their three year relationship earlier this year.
Despite mixing in the top circles of Hollywood, Benjamin is all about the music and has no interest in fame for fame’s sake.
His biggest hit to date is Weatherman – which he played at Wembley Stadium last year – and new single All For You is out now.
A debut album is in the works, after which he plans on touring Australia.
“I am beyond excited to come back and showcase my true self but I haven’t wanted to do that until I have 10 songs that I can play to a crowd,” he explained. “That is why I do this, I want to perform, I want to put on theatrical shows.”
