Andrew Denton reveals how Vogue shaped Julie Bishop’s life
When Andrew Denton asked Julie Bishop about her love for fashion, it took her back to being a child. See the full evolution of her style.
Men are often criticised for asking a woman what she is wearing these days, but when the interviewer is Andrew Denton and the subject is The Hon. Julie Bishop we will let it slide.
The former foreign minister and deputy prime minister sits down with veteran journalist Denton tonight in her first longform interview since she quit politics.
And while they, of course, talk about her time in politics — being one of the few women in Australian politics and the egos she regularly dealt with — fashion was also a hot topic for the stylish 63-year-old.
“I’ve always been interested in fashion from a very early age,” she told Denton.
“I think it comes from being the third daughter, I was so over hand-me-downs that I wanted to make my own statement.
“My mother was also very interested in fashion and I recall as a little girl going to a department store with her and sitting up on the little stool and she would go through the Vogue pattern books and buy material and make clothes.
“I think it was the transformative nature of fashion. Seeing the beautiful dresses that my mother would make and she would appear like a fairy princess in some creation.
“Probably one of my earliest books was a home subscription for Vogue.”
The full interview airs tonight at 8.30pm on Channel 7.
