Rocky and Ross Lynch will be sharing just the right amount of new music when they hit the road for a run of Australian shows this month.
The American muso siblings, who go by The Driver Era, have been “cranking away” creating a bunch of more than 50 songs that they’ve managed to whittle down to an album for release over the coming months.
“We’re probably going to be playing a few, maybe not all of them because it is not always great to play new songs in front of an audience that doesn’t know them,” Ross told Confidential.
“But we will definitely sprinkle in a few because we love it, especially with the way we play our shows with our fans, it is very conversational. Our shows really thrive when there is a conversation happening and the fans want to sing the songs with us and there’s like a bit of a party so sometimes playing new songs is like, not always a vibe.”
Rocky said: “There are so many songs now, too, it is like we play a different show every night.”
Australia has been one of Driver Era’s biggest supporters.
Ross is a former Disney star of Austin & Ally and Teen Beach Movie fame who blew up online as ‘the internet’s boyfriend’ in a steamy clip with Aussie Troye Sivan for his track, One Of Your Girls.
The brothers, who previously performed with their siblings in R5, attended the GQ Men of the Year Awards in Sydney in November 2023.
Their new single, Touch, is out now with Driver Era to bring their Obsession Tour to Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion on January 24 with dates also booked for Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide.
As for what’s to come on the album, Ross said: “Honestly, I feel like there’s some really unique songs and perspectives on this record. Just recently I’ve been hanging out with this girl and she has been showing me these songs and stuff and I think the songs that she likes are awesome, she’s shown me a lot of great music that I hadn’t heard before but then when I circle back and I listen to the music that we’ve been making, it just feels kind of unique to me, which I like a lot. We’re kind of doing weird shit, we are not your stereotypical indie band. The rhythms and the tempo and the chords and the progressions that we do, I just feel like it’s not being done by a lot of people.”
With tour dates in the US taking the brothers through to July, they are planning on dropping another album this year too.
They are unashamedly addicted, “obsessed” even, with music.
“It is tough because sometimes being in a position where people are listening makes you not want to be as honest and vulnerable,” Ross said.
“Honestly, I am saying this with the utmost gratitude for our situation and being able to do what we do, it’s amazing to be able to tour the world and actually like do this for a living, a lot of people can do that. But there are times when you’re like, I wonder if it would be a little easier to be vulnerable and honest if I didn’t know people were already going to pay attention.”
