Goodes, a vocal indigenous affairs advocate, was reluctant to comment on the now infamous stoush between Kerri-Anne Kennerley and Yumi Stynes, saying the perennial Australia Day date change debate always ignites a heated conversation.

“Would you believe I didn’t even see it,” he said. “I know a lot of people are talking about it. Unfortunately it’s just that time of year, Australia Day, that people say silly things.”

He did however praise Australia for shining the light on indigenous issues.

“As a nation I think we have really improved our knowledge of indigenous culture and people,” he said.

“We only have to look to a company like a David Jones who has been in the country 180 years who signed a reconciliation action plan last year.

“Big business are taking the lead and helping educate the workforce.”

Goodes has been working with the leading department store for more than four years, however is yet to grace the catwalk.

But the 39-year-old said never say never.

“I would never say never because you don’t like to limit yourself and you never know what is going to happen. As an ambassador you have to do what you have to do. I would never say no. Don’t worry, I’ve been asked a number of times. I might I will leave that to the professionals for now.
